Former Benfica star urges Spartak to sign players of the level of Chelsea old boy Moses
Published: June 24, 2023Former Benfica star Alexander Mostovoy has advised Spartak Moscow to sign players of the level of Victor Moses and Quincy Promes to stand a chance of challenging Zenit Saint Petersburg for the Russian Premier League title next season.
Zenit have been crowned Russian champions in each of the last five seasons including the 2022-2023 campaign, where they finished sixteen points ahead of third-placed Spartak Moscow.
Moses ended a nine-year association with Chelsea in the summer of 2021 by joining Spartak Moscow on a permanent deal following a successful loan spell the previous season.
Since his arrival at the Muscovites, the 2017 Premier League winner has registered 18 goal involvements in 65 games across all competitions, and won the Russian Cup last year.
Mostovoy believes the current composition of Spartak Moscow is weaker than Zenit Saint Petersburg's squad, and criticized the transfer policy of the Red and Whites.
"If Spartak has the opportunity and is ready to strengthen with players of the level of Zenit stars, then it will be possible to talk about a swing for the championship, " he told euro-football.ru.
"If Spartak wants to become a champion, then they need to be strengthened by players of the level of Promes and Moses.
"And if they acquire mid-level players, then you should not expect such results."
Moses, who is under contract with Spartak Moscow until the end of next season, has also worn the colours of top European clubs such as Liverpool, Inter Milan and Fenerbahce.
