2023 Ballon d'Or Femenin: Oshoala's position revealed as Barcelona teammate wins award
Published: October 30, 2023Super Falcons striker Asisat Oshoala has missed out on the 2023 Ballon d'Or Femenin, with the award going to her Barcelona teammate Aitana Bonmatí after her sensational season for the Spanish giants and Spain's national team.
Bonmati becomes the second Barcelona player to win the award, after Alexia Putellas who claimed it in 2021 and 2022.
Oshoala - the only African player that was in the running for the prestigious accolade - finished twentieth in the Ballon d'Or Femenin ranking.
The five-time African Women's Footballer of the Year ranked higher than Alba Redondo (Levante/Spain), Katie McCabe (Arsenal/Republic of Ireland), Georgia Stanway (Bayern/England), Khadija Shaw (Man City/Jamaica), Sophia Smith (Portland Thorns/USA), Wendie Renard (Lyon/France), Yui Hasegawa (Man City/Japan), Debinha (Kansas City/Brazil), Jill Roord (Man City/Netherlands) and Daphne van Domselaar (Aston Villa/Netherlands).
Oshoala was among six Barcelona players nominated for the women's Ballon d'Or, the others being Salma Paralluelo, Patri Guijarro, Mapi León, Bonmatí and Rolfö.
The former Arsenal and Liverpool star was a key member of the Nigeria squad that reached the last 16 of the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup and won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2023.
Barcelona were awarded the best women's team of 2023 after a brilliant 2022-2023 campaign that saw them win no less then three trophies.
