Opposition watch: Guinea-Bissau name Bolton, Almeria, Lyon, APOEL stars in 25-man AFCON squad
Published: December 23, 2023The Federação de Futebol da Guiné-Bissau have announced Guinea-Bissau's final squad of 25 players for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, with no player based in the domestic championship making the roster.
Guinea-Bissau have been drawn in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations and will wrap up group play against the Super Eagles at the iconic Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on January 22, 2024.
Of the 25 players selected by manager Baciro Cande, fourteen are hoping to make their debuts at the Africa Cup of Nations, namely Ouparine Djoco, Fernando Embadjé, Houboung Mendes, Edgar Ié, Fernando de Lacerda Gomes, Carlos Mané, Janio Bikel da Silva, Carlos Mendes Gomes, Dálcio Gomes, Famana Quizera, Zinho Gano, Franculino Djú, Marciano Sanca Tchami and Jose Correia.
Bolton Wanderers winger Carlos Mendes Gomes, Almeria duo Houboulang Mendes and Marciano Sanca, Lyon winger Mama Samba Baldé and APOEL Nicosia star Dálcio are among the eye-catching names picked by Baciro Cande.
The roster consists of three goalkeepers, eight defenders, six midfielders and eight forwards.
