'A perfectionist' - Nigeria star Tella hails Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso for good work he's done at Bayer
Published: February 29, 2024Nathan Tella has praised Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso for the good work he has done at German Bundesliga table toppers Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso is having a great season as coach of Bayer Leverkusen which has led to speculation surrounding his future with reports linking him with the Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid jobs.
Bayer Leverkusen have dropped only eight points all season, and hold an eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings heading into matchday 24 in the division.
Tella has nothing but praise for Alonso and underlined that the 2010 World Cup winner s not getting carried away with Bayer Leverkusen's record-breaking season.
Speaking to Bundesliga International, Tella remarked: "Yes, I think he doesn’t get too carried away. He doesn’t think about the future. He doesn’t think too far in the future.
"He only thinks about the next game and the next training session and how to improve. If we won a game 3-0, he will look at why we didn’t win 4-0.
"He always wants to be the best and a perfectionist. That is why we strive to be the best, as a team, because he brings it out of us as well."
Bayer Leverkusen hold the distinction of being the only team among Europe's 54 top divisions that have not suffered a defeat in any competitive match throughout the 2023-2024 season.
Moreover, they've achieved a remarkable milestone by extending their unbeaten streak to 33 consecutive competitive games, setting a new record in the process.
Tella, a signing from Southampton last summer, has appeared in 22 matches since landing in Germany and has five goals to his name.
