Nigeria, England or Denmark: Free-scoring Arsenal striker Obi-Martin chooses national team
Published: March 22, 2024Free-scoring Arsenal youth team striker Chidozie Obi-Martin has ended speculation over his international future by pledging his allegiance to his country of birth Denmark.
Born in Glostrup to Nigerian parents, Obi Martin is provisionally cap-tied to the Scandinavian nation having played competitive matches for the U17 squad, most recently against Turkey in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers, but is still eligible to wear the colours of the Super Eagles and Three Lions.
The English Football Association came calling for Obi-Martin a year ago, naming him in the squad for friendlies against the U16 national teams of Cyprus and Scotland.
Following his participation in two matches with the Young Lions, he returned to represent Denmark's youth team, marking his U17s debut with an impressive performance by scoring four goals in a 6-2 victory against Norway.
In the future, Obi-Martin hopes to make his senior debut for Denmark and have a successful international career with the 1992 European champions.
"I was born in Denmark, I have better friends in Denmark and I'm just really happy to play for Denmark," Obi-Martin said to bold.dk.
"In Denmark, I have better teammates. It is easier to speak the language because I have lived longer in Denmark, so it just makes better sense.
"I hope to be able to play in the Danish national team for a long time, so I hope it's just Denmark.
"My dream is to win big things, for a long time I have dreamed of winning the European Championship or World Cup with Denmark, so it will be great."
The 16-year-old Obi-Martin, who has already signed a pre-scholarship deal with Arsenal ahead of next season, has plundered twelve goals for Denmark youth teams.
Denmark's national team head coach Kasper Hjulmand stated in November that he is keeping an eye on the Arsenal talent.
