Spain aiming to cap-tie Barcelona striker on the same date Super Falcons face Banyana Banyana in Pretoria
Published: March 28, 2024The Royal Spanish Football Federation could cap-tie Barcelona wonderkid Vicky López in twelve days time, specifically Tuesday, April 9 - same date Nigeria women's national team face off with South Africa's Banyana Banyana in a must-watch Paris 2024 Olympic qualifiers, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
López is among the twenty three players selected by Spain manager Montserrat Tomé for two 2025 European Women's Championship qualifiers that will be played on April 5 and 9 in Leuven and Burgos.
Spain face Belgium at the Den Dreef Stadium on April 5 and four days later, on April 9, the reigning world champions will take on the Czech Republic at the El Plantío Stadium.
López is among eight Barcelona players called up, the others being Catalina Coll, Ona Batlle, Irene Paredes, Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas, Mariona Caldentey and Salma Paralluelo.
Aged 17 years, 6 months and 27 days, López became the youngest player to represent Spain's senior national team when she made her international debut against the Netherlands on February 23, 2024 and won her second cap against France five days later.
López is still an U21 player and needs to make two more appearances for Spain before she can become cap-tied to her country of birth, according to the new Fifa rules.
She was leaning towards representing the Super Falcons at international level before she became provisionally cap-tied to Spain, but the Nigeria Football Federation were dragging their feet.
The Madrid native won the Golden Ball at the 2022 Fifa U17 Women's World Cup.
