'A killer blow for them' - Ex-Leicester City winger Piper on Ndidi's crucial goal against Southampton
Published: April 24, 2024Former Premier League champions Leicester City are one win away from securing automatic promotion to the English top-flight.
Wilfred Ndidi, Abdul Fatawu and Jamie Vardy were among the goals for Enzo Maresca's side in a 5-0 rout of Southampton at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night, a result that sees the Foxes go four points clear at the top of the table with two matches remaining.
After Issahaku Fatawu's first half opener, Ndidi doubled the advantage at minute 62 with a bullet header.
The Nigeria international started and ended the move that resulted in the goal, winning the ball in the Southampton half although there was contention over a potential foul on Shea Charles in the build-up.
Subsequently, Leicester swiftly circulated the ball, leading to Stephy Mavididi delivering a cross that found Ndidi and the Nigerian directed a header beyond the Southampton goalkeeper from approximately six yards.
Former Leicester City winger Matt Piper, who was on commentary duty for BBC Radio Leicester, noted that Ndidi's goal was a killer blow in a period Southampton were trying to get back in the game, shortly after manager Russell Martin brought on two substitutes Ryan Manning and Sam Edozie.
Reacting to Ndidi's goal, he said: "The crowd were moaning when Jamie Vardy held onto it, they thought he should have shot.
"But Wilfred Ndidi comes steaming in with his sixth goal of the season. Southampton must be gutted-it is a killer blow for them."
Ndidi has now scored three goals against Southampton, more than against any other team in his professional career.
