Shola Ameobi Rejects Move To Non-League Team South Shields
Published: February 08, 2016
Free agent Shola Ameobi, 34, has turned down a move to South Shields FC after he was approached by the Ebac Northern League Second Division table-toppers.
The former Nigeria international refused the proposal from manager Jon King because he already has other offers he is weighing up.
“I got a number for Shola and spoke to him after I saw he was unattached and not playing,” King told Shields Gazette.
When things like this come up you don’t know what people are thinking – whether they’d rather play local, retire, go abroad.”
He added : “I asked the question and if you don’t ask, you don’t get. Shola said he’s got a couple of offers at the minute and he’s hoping to stay as a pro.
“I thought it might be a good fit with Shola but it was the wrong time. Who knows, it might be a better time in the future.”
Ameobi spent 14 years at Newcastle United before brief spells with Turkish side Gaziantep, Crystal Palace and Bolton Wanderers.
