Goal-scoring Version Of Mikel Bags Assist As Chelsea Thrash Swansea City In U18 PL
Published: September 23, 2017
Nigerian midfielder Tariq Uwakwe returned to Chelsea's starting line-up against Swansea City in the U18 Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to today's contest at Swansea City FC Youth Academy Training Centre, the England U19 international had not been involved across all levels for Chelsea youth teams since the opening round of the season, when he lasted 74 minutes on the pitch against Aston Villa U18s.
The versatile midfielder, who has been dubbed the new Obi Mikel because of his offensive and defensive qualities, provided the assist for Chelsea's opening goal scored by Billy Gilmour in the 30th minute.
The Blues' other scorers were Taylor-Crossdale, Daishawn Redan (2) and George McEachran.
Having gone the distance against the Swans, it remains to be seen if England U19s manager Keith Downing will invite Uwakwe for the international friendlies against Czech Republic and Slovakia early next month.
He had seriously considered the idea of representing Nigeria internationally before he made his debut for England U18s team.
Last season, Uwakwe contributed to 11 goals (8 goals, 3 assists) scored by Chelsea U18s in all competitions.
