Nigeria 1 Netherlands 3 : Olusegun Strikes As Golden Eaglets Crash Out Of U17 World Cup
Published: November 06, 2019Nigeria's Golden Eaglets crashed out of the 2019 U-17 World Cup following a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands at the Estadio Olimpico in their Round of sixteen clash on Wednesday morning.
Manu Garba handed starts to Akinkunmi Amoo, Ibrahim Sa'id and Peter Olawale in Goiania, and also reinstated Daniel Jinadu in goal but it was the Dutch that looked the more fluent in the opening exchanges.
The Golden Eaglets seem not to have sorted their defensive issues and Manchester City's Jayden Braaf was on hand to tee up Ajax's Sontje Hansen for the opener with barely four minutes on the clock.
Sidos FC's Amoo teed up Olakunle Olusegun for the equalising goal twelve minutes later, as it looked Nigeria were beginning to find their feet into the game.
But after only three minutes from that strike, some slack defending yet again exposed the African side's soft under belly when Hansen was allowed too much time and space in the box to grab his brace and put Netherlands back into the lead.
The scoreline stayed in the favour of the Dutch for much of the game no thanks to Nigeria's culpability in passing up great chances, with Peter Olawale and Olusegun the main culprits.
Hansen made them pay even more when he converted a penalty to grab his third goal after VAR had adjudged Ferdinand Ikenna to have blocked Mohamed Taabouni's shot with his hand in the 76th minute.
Nigeria's starting XI: Jinadu, Adeniyi, Etim, Tijani, Ikenna, Ibrahim, Olusegun, Ojediran, Olawale, Amoo, Said
