Ex-Liverpool Star Thrilled With Performance Of Rangers' Italian-Born Nigerian Left-back Bassey
Published: October 26, 2020Italian-born left-back of Nigerian descent Calvin Bassey was one of the players singled out for praise following Rangers' 2-0 win against Efe Ambrose's Livingston at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday evening.
Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo marked his return to the starting lineup by opening the scoring in the ninth minute and Jermain Defoe's 300th career goal secured the three points.
Aribo wasn't the only left-footed Nigerian player in action as Bassey was rewarded with a spot in the starting lineup after impressing off the bench on his debut in the group stage of the Europa League, a 2-0 win at Standard Liege.
Former Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister, who is Steven Gerrard's assistant at Rangers, was thrilled with the performance of the 20-year-old defender.
On Bassey, he told Rangers TV : "This is about players being competitive. It is a competitive squad and we have two players for every position.
"When you get an opportunity to go and grab the jersey, that is what the young fella has done. He has been really refreshing."

A product of the Leicester City Academy, Bassey is open to representing the Nigerian national teams.
