Done Deal : Youngest-Ever Nigerian To Play In English Premier League Joins Djurgardens IF
Published: February 08, 2021With a statement on their official website, Swedish Allsvenskan side Djurgardens IF have announced with pride the signing of Nigerian striker Joel Asoro.
The 21-year-old has ended his association with Championship side Swansea City after putting pen to paper on a four-year contract with Djurgardens IF, keeping him at DIF until the end of the 2024 season.
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Asoro is the youngest player of Nigerian descent to debut in the English Premier League, aged 17 years and 117 days, when he came on in the 81st minute of Sunderland's 2-1 loss to Middlesbrough on August 21, 2016.
After signing the deal, Asoro said to the club's official website : "It felt like the right decision to say yes. I have had many friends who played in Djurgården and always had a good view of Bosse Andersson who has known me since I was little.
"So it has felt like I have a connection to Djurgården and it has been with me that I will someday play here.
"I said that if I was to move back to Sweden, Djurgården is the association that is closest to my heart, so it became an obvious choice."
He continued : "I want to be able to feel at home and play in a team that wants to build me up and where I for my part can be involved and build up the team.
"I did not get the playing time I was hoping for in Genoa and it has of course been hard.
"But I still have high ambitions with my football, so for me this was a very good plan to get home to Sweden and Djurgården to start again."
Asoro, who lists Genoa, FC Groningen, BP and IFK Haninge among his previous clubs, has been handed the number 10 jersey at Djurgården.
