UCL : Chukwueze the hero as Villarreal eliminate Bayern Munich
Published: April 12, 2022
Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze was the hero of the night on Tuesday as he scored the decisive equaliser two minutes to full time for Villarreal against mighty Bayern Munich in a 2-1 win on aggregate that secured the La Liga side a semifinals berth in the UEFA Champions League.
Chukwueze was a late substitute for Villarreal at the Allianz Arena as he was brought off the bench by manager Unai Emery just as he was at the Estadio La Ceramica in the first leg last week Wednesday when he replaced Arnaut Danjuma.
Bayern were hard pressed to avoid Champions League elimination at the quarterfinals stage in successive seasons
The Yellow Submarine had the first chance to score as early as the sixth minute of the game but Gerard Moreno's shot from the edge of the box flew past the goal.
Bayern had two clear cut chances in the first half to go ahead while another Moreno effort for Villarreal could only hit the side netting just before the half time break.
Lewandowski got the Bavarians' goal in the 52nd minute with a fantastic finish at the far post after he combined beautifully with with Thomas Muller.
Dutch forward of Nigerian descent Arnaut Danjuma had chances in both halves to put his team ahead but on both occasions wasted the opportunities.
The flying winger was however substituted with five minutes left on the clock by Alphonso Pedraga.
Barely four minutes after coming on, Chukwueze scored the vital foal for his club. First, Daniel Parejo picked out Gerard Moreno who then found the Nigerian. The connection wasn't so fantastic but it was enough to beat Manuel Neuer.
The strike was enough to send the Spanish La Liga side to the semifinals stage.
