Former AS Monaco winger backs Jose Peseiro's Super Eagles appointment
Published: May 18, 2022Former AS Monaco winger Victor Ikpeba has expressed his optimism that new Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro will take the three-time African champions back to glorious days.
The Portuguese tactician who was recommended by AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho was expected to take charge of the team after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon but interim coach Austin Eguavoen continued in the saddle.
Eguavoen who was former international teammate of Ikpeba however stayed on until Nigeria's failure to book a ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
"Is it all ex internationals that are against Peseiro? I'm a Technical Committee member of the Nigeria Football Federation," the 1997 African Footballer of the Year winner said on Supersport's Monday Night Football, monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com.
"Anybody can coach the Super Eagles. By anybody I mean anybody that has the pedigree to do so.
"There's no guarantee, no system of play. The players have to go there and know that they are playing for the Super Eagles.
"I won't dwell on the past. We have to dwell on the present. The present now is that we have to start all over again.
"Peseiro? Westerhof came here no pedigree, Bonfrere came here no pedigree, Gernot Rohr... Any coach that can get the best out of this players has done a brilliant job.
" We have to start all over again. I'm not against it (Peseiro's appointment)," Ikpeba concluded.
Peseiro's first games in charge of the team will be the upcoming international friendlies against Mexico and Ecuador.
