Talent spotter behind Salzburg signing two Nigerians set to be appointed Chelsea sporting director
Published: September 19, 2022English Premier League giants Chelsea are set to appoint Christoph Freund as the club's new sporting director.
According to Italian transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, the Austrian talent spotter, who holds a similar position at Red Bull Salzburg, is apparently on the brink of reaching an agreement with Chelsea as their new sporting director.
Freund has been with Salzburg since 2006, starting as the club's team manager, then rose to become sports coordinator and has been sporting director since 2015.

In July, Freund extended his contract at the Austrian Bundesliga champions until at least June 30, 2026 but it is unlikely he will honour the agreement.
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that Freund is a 'very good man' and behind the deals that took two Nigerian players in the shape of Bright Edomwonyi and Samson Tijani to Salzburg in 2012 and 2020 respectively.
The 45-year-old has strong negotiation and interpersonal skills as both players were heavily courted by bigger European clubs before Salzburg won the race for their services.
Chelsea are in talks with Salzburg to get the deal over the line in the coming days.
Freund has built a reputation for signing talented young African players as he was also involved in the deals that took Sadio Mane, Naby Keïta, Diadie Samassékou, Patson Daka, Amadou Haidara and Enock Mwepu to Salzburg.
