Algeria 2 Nigeria 1 : Moffi's early goal not enough as Eagles are beaten by Foxes again
Published: September 27, 2022
Nigeria's Super Eagles on Tuesday suffered a 2-1 defeat against the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the international friendly at the Miloud Hadefi Stadium in Oran.
Nigeria have now lost four consecutive matches against Algeria, including a 2018 World Cup qualifier which was forfeited in Algeria's favour after former manager Gernot Rohr fielded an ineligible player.
The Eagles had played a test game against the home-based Algerian national team on Friday in a 2-2 but met a stiffer opposition with the top Algerian stars on duty for the former African champions.
Lorient striker Terem Moffi put the Nigerians ahead in the ninth minute but the three-time African champions struggled to impose themselves on the game again.
Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez converted a penalty four minutes before the halftime break after Frank Onyeka had fouled an opponent.
The Algerians continued to dominate on the second and that paid off when Youcef Atal struck a long range effort that caught a badly positioned goalkeeper Francis Uzoho off guard just past the our mark.
Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro made some introductions in the second half bringing on Godwin Saviour, Taiwo Awoniyi and Cyriel Dessers in attack in search of an equaliser but it came to nought.
Nigeria's next international he is a friendly against Portugal on November 17.
