Flying Eagles-eligible defender helps Chelsea register win on EFL Trophy debut
Published: October 05, 2022
Flying Eagles-eligible defender Derrick Abu made his first ever appearance for Chelsea in the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday night as they came from behind to register a 2-1 victory over League One opponents Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium.
Manager Mark Robinson named an unchanged side for the trip to Oxford, with Abu deployed in a right-back role in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Six minutes into the game, the Nigerian fullback almost created a goal for Elliot, picking out the Chelsea number 49 with a cross but the striker's touch let him down.
Matty Taylor broke the deadlock inside ten minutes when he finished from six yards after a corner was headed down into his path.
Second half goals from Mason Burstow and Lewis Hall saw the Blues come from behind to register their first win in Southern Group G.
Abu, who played the full game, was involved in the build up to Chelsea's winning goal as an exchange of passes between him, Hutchinson and Webster found Hall, who blasted high into the net with eight minutes left on the clock.
Up next, Abu and his development squad teammates face West Ham United in the Premier League 2 on Saturday, October 8.
