Lampard confirms Everton are in talks with Super Eagles star over a new contract
Published: October 13, 2022
Speaking at his pre-match press conference to preview Everton's upcoming Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur, manager Frank Lampard revealed that there is a possibility of Alex Iwobi signing a new contract with the club.
The Nigeria international will enter the final year of his contract next summer and the Toffees are keen to extend his stay at Goodison Park having started preliminary talks with the central midfielder's camp.
Iwobi has flourished this season under Lampard, starting every single game played by Everton and has five goal involvements (1 goal, 4 assists) to his name from ten appearances in all competitions.
After a difficult start to his career at Goodison Park, Iwobi is starting to justify the fee Everton paid to sign him from Arsenal in August 2019.
The Nigerian arrived at Everton for a fee of £28m upfront with performance-related add-ons amounting to £7m.
This season, Iwobi initially played as a double six before moving into a slightly advanced number 8 position, and his form has been great so much so that he was nominated for the Premier League Player of the Month for September.
Asked to confirm whether contract talks are ongoing, Lampard told reporters : "Yeah, I know that Kevin (Thelwell) is speaking with Alex's people on that front so we'll see how that one develops".
Iwobi was on the books of Arsenal for fifteen years before transferring to Everton.
