Confirmed team news : PSV's Anglo-Nigerian winger will not start against Arsenal
Published: October 20, 2022
Speaking to reporters at Wednesday's pre-match press conference, PSV Eindhoven manager Ruud van Nistelrooy confirmed that England U21 international of Nigerian descent Nonso Madueke will not be named in the starting lineup on Thursday evening when they face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Europa League.
Van Nistelrooy has taken twenty four players to the English capital, including Tottenham Hotspur academy product Madueke, Luuk de Jong, and Mauro Junior, who recently recovered from injuries.
The Anglo-Nigerian winger has been training with the PSV squad since last week but the games against FC Zurich and FC Utrecht came too soon for him.
Madueke has yet to make his season debut for the Eindhoven club as he has been sidelined since the end of July with an ankle injury he suffered in pre-season preparations.
Madueke, Luuk de Jong, and Mauro Junior are all available for selection but the trio will not start against the Gunners.
"It's great that they are here. All the players that I took are ready to make minutes if not I wouldn't have taken them," Van Nistelrooy told reporters.
"Players that cannot play minutes are in Eindhoven working on their recovery . Of course for them three it's the first time they are back after a long time.
"For them it's good to build up making minutes and that's what the plan is for tomorrow."
Continuing, the former Manchester United striker said : "It's logical that those three players are on the bench because they are coming back from long injuries so it's normal they are not starting and looking to make game minutes."
The match between Arsenal and PSV was supposed to be played in September, but due to Queen Elizabeth's funeral, too few police were available in London and the match was postponed to Thursday.
