'A big powerful boy'  - Chelsea boss explains why Chukwuemeka came on against Brentford

Chelsea manager Graham Potter has explained the rationale behind his decision to hand minutes to Carney Chukwuemeka in their goalless draw against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Wednesday night.

Prior to the London derby, the summer signing from Aston Villa had played just four minutes of senior football.

Chukwuemeka showed his class in twenty eight minutes of action against the Bees and came close to winning the game for the Blues in the 90th minute but brought a smart save out of Raya.

The 19-year-old sent a low drive towards goal from the angle of the six-yard box, but the Brentford goalkeeper stuck out his left leg to block the shot

Potter revealed that Chukwuemeka was brought on because of his physical attributes, adding that he was impressed by the display the central midfielder put in.

"If you look at Carney’s attributes he is a big powerful boy that can run, and run away from people," Potter was quoted as saying by Chelsea's official website

"In a game like Brentford you're often in duels and you need physicality and he and Christian Pulisic did well when they came on, they affected the game.

"Carney's a young player but he's got exciting attributes. We just need to help him reach his potential which is exciting."

Chelsea invested fifteen million pounds plus five million pounds in performance-related add-ons to sign Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa in August.
