'He's not a problem' - Nigeria's Portuguese manager backs Man Utd superstar Ronaldo
Published: November 10, 2022
José Peseiro reckons that Cristiano Ronaldo will not be a problem for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup even though the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has been in the news for mostly negative reasons since the end of last season.
Peseiro who is Portuguese by nationality heaped praises on the Manchester United superstar, saying the 37-year-old is the reason why the Portuguese football national team is amongst the best in the world.
Ronaldo has had a torrid campaign so far, scoring three goals and assisting two in 16 appearances across all competitions for Manchester United.
"Ronaldo will never be a problem for the national team. Never. Never. He brought us to the top. Not only him, of course, but he's not a problem. He's a solution, Peseiro told Tuttomercatoweb.com.
"He did everything for the national team, he fought for us. and he scored, scored, scored and scored again.
"In the last twenty years he has shown that Portugal is among the best in the world. Right now everyone respects us, our strength, our quality and everyone thinks that, with Ronaldo, you can always win something."
Ronaldo led Portugal to their first UEFA Euro Championship title in 2016, twelve years after suffering defeat to Greece at Euro 2004 on home soil.
The former Real Madrid star has played for Portugal at four FIFA World Cups : 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2018.
Logically, at 37 years of age, the 2022 World Cup should be Ronaldo's last dance for the Selecao.
In preparation for the tournament in Qatar, Portugal will take on Nigeria in an international friendly in Lisbon on November 17th, 2022.
