Standout player Papa Johns Trophy group stage : Arsenal's Anglo-Nigerian starlet nominated
Published: November 12, 2022
Arsenal's Anglo-Nigerian winger Nathan Butler-Oyedeji has been nominated for the Papa Johns Trophy Player of the group stage, informs the official website of the English Football League.
The 19-year-old is one of four names in contention for the award, with Jacob Chapman (Salford City), Dennis Politic (Port Vale) and Kieran Sadlier (Bolton Wanderers) also making the shortlist.
Butler-Oyedeji started all the matches played by Arsenal in the group stage and was involved in four of the five goals scored by the north London club.
He scored a brace in a 2-0 win over the first team of Cambridge United on August 30, and in the last group game against Northampton Town he supplied an assist for Amario Cozier-Duberry in the 74th minute before putting the icing on the cake in stoppage time.
The exciting winger showcased his dazzling footwork, pace and finishing ability in the group stage and was close to netting a hat-trick against Cambridge United but hit the woodwork.
Arsenal first team manager Mikel Arteta is known to be keeping tabs on Butler-Oyedeji with a view to handing him his senior debut, having invited him to train with the senior squad on multiple occasions since the start of the 2022-2023 season.
The young Gunners will face League Two club Stevenage in the round of 32 of the Papa Johns Trophy.
