Top 5 countries Nigerian fans are likely to support at the 2022 World Cup
Published: November 13, 2022
The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar begins in seven days time but there is no Nigeria on the roster.
The three-time African champions lost out to Ghana in the playoffs back in March on the away goals rule.
Nigerians are understandably disappointed in their team's absence from the top tournament in the Gulf.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents the 5 countries that Nigerians are likely to adopt during the World Cup.
1. England
The choice of England for most Nigerians is because of the popularity of the English Premier League in Sub Saharan Africa.
The Premier League is extremely popular in Nigeria and most fans will have their players on display in Qatar.
Historically and politically, Nigeria gained independence from England so there is some like there.
Players of Nigerian descent have always played for Three Lions albeit only Bukayo Saka is named in England’s squad for the World Cup this month.
2. Brazil
Widely acknowledged as the most successful national team at the World Cup, Brazil have have a big pool players in the major leagues around the world that Nigerian fans are familiar with.
Tite's team is loaded with seasoned campaigners and that flamboyant, *samba* brand of football will entertain Nigerian fans.
3. Senegal
Since there is no Nigeria featuring at the World Cup, there must be an African side that will interest Nigerians.
Unfortunately for Ghana, it's not the Black Stars who denied them a place in Qatar despite being an Anglophone nation in West Africa unlike the Senegalese that are Francophone.
Fingers crossed that Sadio Mane will be fit enough for the tournament though after his recent knee injury in the Bundesliga.
4. Argentina
Lionel Messi. Who else will make Nigerian fans support Argentina so badly in Qatar?
There might be a section of fans rooting for other Argentina superstars like Lautaro Martinez, Lisandro Martinez and so on, but the majority of the supporters are backing Messi to emulate Diego Maradona and win a World Cup title before he retires.
5. Portugal And Cristiano Ronaldo!
What final do you think most fans of Messi and Ronaldo are desperate to see before the two football icons hang their boots - the World Cup final on December 18th possibly.
This is a dream World Cup final and most Nigerians will be praying fervently that destiny bring these two stars to the field on the final of the tournament.
