Supersub Orban on target as KAA Gent march on in Europa Conference League
Published: February 24, 2023
KAA Gent booked their place in the last sixteen of the Europa Conference League after beating Qarabag 5-3 on penalties at the KAA Gent Stadium-Ghent on Thursday night.
Gift Orban, a winter signing from Stabæk Fotball in Norway, played a key role in the win, scoring in the 74th minute to take the game to penalties.
The 20-year-old has been in sparkling form since his transfer, with his strike against the Azerbaijan opponents taking his tally to three goals in four matches.
Three minutes after coming off the bench, Orban rammed home from close range for his first-ever goal in European competition.
The score was still level on aggregate after the thirty minutes of extra time, so the game had to be settled by a penalty shootout.
Orban was on spot-kick duty during the shootout, and he was one of the five Gent players who didn't miss from the spot, sending the ball into the bottom corner to beat the goalkeeper.
Gent will discover their next opponents on Friday, February 24 when the UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16 draw takes place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
The UEFA Europa Conference League round of 16 involves the eight group winners and the eight knockout round play-off winners
