'Not good for me' - Nigeria-eligible striker explains why he rejected transfer to Liverpool
Published: March 03, 2023
Germany U21 international of Nigerian descent Kevin Schade has explained why he turned down the chance to join Premier League giants Liverpool in the January transfer window and instead opted to move to Brentford.
The Super Eagles-eligible forward joined the Bees on loan for the remainder of the 2022-2023 season.
Brentford expect to make the deal permanent for a club-record undisclosed fee in the summer, with Schade set to sign a five-year contract.
Schade put himself in the shop window after a breakout 2021-2022 season that saw him score four goals in 21 Bundesliga matches before suffering an injury, and was involved in five goals in his first four games for Germany's U21 national team.
The 21-year-old has the attributes needed to excel in the Premier League as he is fast, has aerial presence, dangerous in front of goal as well as being versatile.
Schade revealed that a potential move to Liverpool ultimately did not materialize because he would not be guaranteed playing time at the six-time European champions.
Speaking to Brentford's match programme, Schade explained : "Brentford wanted me. They really wanted me. It’s a good step. It’s a Premier League club who are doing really well at the moment.
"To go to somewhere like Liverpool is not good for me because I would not play.
"Fresh from an injury, I need time and games to be 100 per cent fit."
Schade has made five appearances for Brentford since his arrival at the Gtech Community Stadium, including debuts in the Premier League and FA Cup.
