'Hit like a rocket' - 1994 AFCON winner hails Arsenal winger Nelson for spectacular game-winner
Published: March 04, 2023
Former Super Eagles striker Efan Ekoku has heaped plaudits on Arsenal winger, Reiss Nelson for his spectacular match-winning goal on Saturday evening against Bournemouth.
League leaders, Arsenal came from two goals down to defeat the visitors 3-2 in a pulsating game that seemed to be heading to a 2-2 draw.
Cap-tied Denmark international of Nigerian descent, Philip Billing put Bournemouth ahead within seconds of the first whistle and the Cherries doubled their lead through Marcos Senesi in the 57th minute.
But the Gunners rallied to restore parity before the unexpected happened just before the final whistle.
Picking up the ball at the edge of the box, Nelson whizzed the ball to the top right corner beyond the reach of Bournemouth goalkeeper, Neto.
Ekoku, on commentary duties for the Premier League world feed, had this to say when Nelson's match winner sent shock waves around England and the watching world.
"What a game, what a squad. What about that strike from Reiss Nelson. Absolutely truly hit like a rocket. The keper had no chance.," the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner with Nigeria went on inside a rapturous Emirates stadium.
Arsenal have garnered 63 points and are still five points ahead of reigning champions, Manchester City who had earlier in the day defeated Newcastle United 2-0.
