U20 AFCON : Former West Brom defender explains why Flying Eagles lost to The Gambia
Published: March 08, 2023
Former Super Eagles and West Brom defender Ifeanyi Udeze has disagreed with a onetime Flying Eagles Oladunmi Oyekale who is of the opinion that Ladan Bosso's team were unlucky in the 1-0 defeat against a 10-man The Gambia in the semifinals of the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Seven-time African champions at the U-20 level, Nigeria were beaten by tournament surprise side, The Gambia at the Cairo International Stadium on Monday evening.
The Nigerian side will face Tunisia in the third place playoff on Friday while Gambia and Senegal battle for the top prize as African champions on Saturday.
"I don't agree that they (Flying Eagles) were unlucky in that match as Oyekale said," Udeze insists Tuesday on Brila FM, Lagos.
"Being unlucky means you created lots of goal scoring chances. Our players didn't do that against Gambia.
"The Flying Eagles barely troubled the Gambians and possibly underrated the team. I am just happy that they have qualified for the World Cup.
"But as for the game yesterday (Monday), our boys did not cover themselves on glory. But I wish them the very best in the 3rdcplace against Tunisia and ultimately the World Cup in Indonesia," Udeze noted.
The Gambians have not conceded a goal at the U-20 AFCON likewise Senegal who are the defending champions of the tournament.
