Chukwuemeka sends message to Chelsea teammates after UCL win v Borussia Dortmund
Published: March 08, 2023
Carney Chukwuemeka has taken to social media to congratulate his Chelsea teammates after they beat in-form German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
After ten consecutive wins in all competitions, the visitors suffered their first loss in 2023 to exit the Champions League.
Against Dortmund, England U20 international Chukwuemeka was called up for a Champions League game for the sixth time this season without being utilized off the bench.
The 19-year-old was also a reserve option against Dinamo Zagreb, Salzburg (2), AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund in the away leg.
Kai Havertz came closest to breaking the deadlock inside the opening 30 minutes but his shot from the edge of the penalty area hit the post, spun along the line and bounced out.
Two minutes before halftime, Raheem Sterling sent an emphatic finish beyond Alexander Meyer to open the scoring and Havertz gave Chelsea the lead on aggregate in the 53rd minute when he converted a retaken penalty after hitting the post in his first attempt.
With the win against Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea have progressed from five UEFA Champions League knockout stage ties after losing the first leg, and in doing so equaled the feats of Barcelona, Juventus and Real Madrid.
