Chelsea winger Madueke shares the back story behind his move to PSV Eindhoven
Published: March 16, 2023
Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has admitted that his Nigerian father played an important role in his transfer to PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2018.
The England youth teamer made a bold decision to join the Dutch Eredivisie giants after declining a scholarship at Tottenham Hotspur.
Madueke was one of the first Anglo-Nigerian teenagers to move abroad in search of first-team football, following in the footsteps of another Tottenham Hotspur-reared winger Keanan Bennetts who signed for Borussia Mönchengladbach a few months earlier.
Turning a blind eye to his injuries, Madueke's time at PSV can be considered a success given that he broke into the first team two years later and departed the Eindhoven club with 80 appearances under his belt.
The winger was spotted by PSV Eindhoven while he was playing against them in a Premier League tournament
Although Tottenham Hotspur were beaten by eventual winners PSV in the semifinals, Madueke did enough to impress the youth team coaches of the Dutch club.
Explaining how his move to PSV came about, Madueke revealed that his father chatted to the parents of then-PSV defender Ian Maatsen about the possibility of the winger moving to the club during the game between the Eindhoven club and the Londoners.
Speaking to Chelsea's official website, Madueke stated : "In that game when we played them, one of their parents was speaking to my dad – it was Ian Maatsen's, who is playing for Burnley now, a good player.
"They were laughing and joking and then my dad said he’d bring me to PSV, so they should go and tell the coach.
"Once Ian Maatsen’s dad realised my dad was being serious, he actually went straight over and did tell their coach.
"That’s how they established the connection, they came and watched a few more games and came in at the end of the season and said they wanted to do it."
Madueke ended his four-and-a-half-year association with PSV in the January transfer window, signing a deal that will keep him at Chelsea until at least the end of the 2029-2030 season.
