Pundit reveals what impressed him about Onuachu in Southampton's win v Chelsea
Published: March 21, 2023Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has found game time hard to come by at Southampton in recent weeks, and has yet to open his goalscoring account since his arrival at the St. Mary's Stadium from Racing Genk in Belgium.
Just before the close of the January transfer window, Onuachu joined Southampton on a three-and-a-half-year deal for a transfer fee of 18 million euros and if bonuses are included, the fee could rise to 21 million euros.
Since the start of March, the FC Ebedei product has logged 29 minutes from a possible 360 in the English Premier League, with the two appearances coming off the bench against Manchester United and Brentford.
Southampton insider and Daily Echo reporter, Alfie House has suggested that Onuachu has faded into the background due to a change of coaching staff at the Saints.
House reckons that Onuachu's standout performance came against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge when Southampton sealed a shock 1-0 win over the Londoners.
Southampton were desperate to sign a striker in the winter transfer market and turned their attention to Onuachu after they were priced out a deal to sign Terem Moffi.
Revealing what impressed him about Onuachu's performance against Chelsea, House said to Het Nieuwsblad via Voetbalnieuws : "It was quite a panic buy, but Onuachu immediately showed his value and quickly became a starting player.
"Especially in the win against Chelsea, he made a very strong impression, winning many headers and keeping up with the balls."
Onuachu won our aerial duels in the win against Chelsea, more than any other Southampton player.
