Iwobi, Ndidi, Iheanacho, Osimhen start for Super Eagles v Guinea-Bissau; Osayi-Samuel cap-tied
Published: March 24, 2023
Jose Peseiro has named his seventh starting lineup as coach of the Super Eagles ahead of the national team's 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Guinea-Bissau at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The Portuguese football tactician has made four changes from the side that started against Portugal in the Super Eagles' last game in 2022.
As expected, Francis Uzoho gets the nod in goal, shielded by the center--back pairing of Kevin Akpoguma and Calvin Bassey, while Bright Osay-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi are in the fullback positions.
With his inclusion in the starting lineup against Guinea-Bissau, Blackpool academy product Osayi-Samuel, who was previously eligible for England, is set to become cap-tied to Nigeria.
Peseiro has experimented with the four defenders, naming them on the same team during Wednesday evening's training session.
It appears the former Porto manager has set up his team in a 4-4-2 formation, with Wilfred Ndidi joined in central midfield by Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Alex Iwobi.
The Everton ace and Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper Uzoho are the only players who have played every single minute of the national team's matches since the appointment of Peseiro as coach.
Completing the four-man midfield are Samuel Chukwueze and Ademola Lookman who both played for the same team in the second part of the training game on Wednesday.
Napoli striker Victor Osimhen will spearhead the Super Eagles attack, with Kelechi Iheanacho operating as a deep-lying forward.
Super Eagles starting lineup : Uzoho; Osayi-Samuel, Akpoguma, Bassey, Sanusi; Ndidi, Iwobi, Chukwueze, Lookman; Iheanacho, Osimhen
