Super Eagles best starting lineup post-AFCONQ : Midfielders
Published: March 30, 2023
With the Super Eagles players who prosecuted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying games against Guinea-Bissau set to restart their club duties across Europe this weekend, allnigeriasoccer.com looks at the players who should be considered as Nigeria's best XI at the moment.
The criteria used to come up with this lineup are current form, versatility, leadership, creativity and passion for the Nigerian jersey.
In the latest installment of our feature on the best Super XI at the moment after the Afcon qualifiers, we take a look at the midfielders who will provide the attack with the ammunition to cause the damage.
Midfielders
Wilfred Ndidi
Ndidi may not be having the best of time after his comeback from a serious injury setback but he is considered almost indispensable in this current squad.
The Leicester star missed the crucial qualifier against Ghana and the well acclaimed most important player for the team barring Victor Osimhen can only be said to be experiencing a downturn.
Class is however permanent and he could bounce back from the current slump.
Joe Aribo : Playing in central midfield is Southampton's Joe Aribo.
Aribo on his good day is effective playing either in this 'number 8 role' or as the number 10 but he is better suited in the former.
Aribo has not been in action for his relegation-threatened Premier League side for sometime but when he came on against Guinea-Bissau in the reverse leg of the qualifiers at the September 4 stadium, he had a shot on goal and showed hunger.
For being consistent with the Super Eagles so far, he still gets a place in our team.
Alex Iwobi : Super Eagles winger cum midfielder Alex Iwobi thrives in the middle of the park where his creativity is best deployed.
At the moment, he is the creative spark in Nigeria's midfield.
The nephew of the legendary Austin Jay Jay Okocha takes up the number 10 role as the country's football faithful still hopes that he can come good good like his more illustrious uncle.
A player in the Nigeria Premier League that could for into this creative role is Lobi Stars' Chukwuka Onuwa.
But for some inexplicable reasons, the former MFM diminutive star has not won the confidence of the home-based Super Eagles handlers.
