PL-bound Burnley post scouts to run the rule over Nigerian CB in Atalanta win v Cremonese
Published: April 01, 2023
Premier League-bound Burnley are reportedly keeping tabs on former Austria U21 international of Nigerian descent Emanuel Aiwu.
With eight games to go, the team coached by Manchester City legend Vincent Kompany are all but guaranteed promotion to the English top-flight as they sit seventeen points ahead of third-placed Middlesbrough.
Ahead of their return to the Premier League, Burnley are logically in the market for defenders as three of their players Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ian Maatsen and Jordan Beyer have been loaned in from Manchester City, Chelsea and Borussia Mönchengladbach respectively.
According to Italian transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, the Clarets posted scouts to monitor central defender Aiwu during Cremonese's 3-1 loss to Ademola Lookman's Atalanta on Saturday evening.
Wearing the number 4 at the back of his jersey, Aiwu was on parade at the Stadio Giovanni Zini (Cremona) for the entirety of the game.
The Austrian-Nigerian was at fault for the third goal conceded by Cremonese in injury time when as the last man, he was caught on the ball by Jérémie Boga in the lead-up to Lookman's strike.
Aiwu joined Cremonese last summer from Rapid Vienna, signing a four-year deal until June 30, 2026.
The 22-year-old has totaled 21 appearances for Cremonese including eighteen in the Serie A.
