Golden Eaglets-eligible player scores first competitive goal for Liverpool youth team
Published: April 11, 2023Golden Eaglets-eligible player Afolami Onanuga scored his first competitive goal for Liverpool youth teams as the U18s thrashed Newcastle United 4-0 in an U18 Premier League fixture staged at the Newcastle United Academy Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Onanuga got his goal which was the Young Reds' third in the 76th minute when he drove home a low half-volley into the bottom corner.
Jayden Danns' powerful header gave Liverpool the lead in the 37th minute.
Ranel Young got Liverpool second in the 74th minute and would go on to complete the rout in the 84th minute after a pass from Nigeria-eligble winger Elijah Gift.
Onanuga is an attacking midfielder who made his competitive debut for Liverpool U18s in August last year, playing for 79 minutes as the young Reds lost to Leeds United in the league.
He has totaled 8 appearances in the U18 PL, starting 5 of those games and has come on as a substitute three times.
Onanuga made his FA Youth Cup debut in Liverpool's 2-0 loss to Ipswich Town in February 2023.
He received two call-ups for UEFA Youth League matches this season but wasn't utilized off the bench, and was also a non-playing substitute against PSG in the Premier League International Cup.
