The possible reason Chukwuemeka missed Chelsea's 2-0 loss to Real Madrid
Published: April 12, 2023England U20 international of Nigerian descent Carney Chukwuemeka was not listed for Chelsea in their 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The central midfielder was also omitted from the matchday squad against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend in what was Frank Lampard's first game in charge on his return to Chelsea.
The Athletic UK's injury expert Ben Dinnery claims that the Anglo-Nigerian was left out of the traveling party to Madrid due to a knock.
Chukwuemeka is currently being assessed ahead of Chelsea's Premier League meeting with Brighton & Hove on Saturday.
Signed from Aston Villa last summer, the 19-year-old has yet to make his debut for the Blues in the Champions League but has been included in the matchday squad on six occasions.
Chelsea have a mountain to climb to progress to the last four of the Champions League after conceding two goals at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Karim Benzema tapped in from close range to give Real Madrid the lead after 21 minutes and the holders exploited their numerical advantage with sixteen minutes left on the clock when Marco Asensio doubled the advantage from the edge of the area.
The second leg takes place at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, April 18 with Chelsea hoping to turn the game around in their favour.
