Confirmed : Argentine football tactician won't be coaching Awonyi, Dennis at Nottingham Forest
Published: April 15, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Brazilian Serie A club Flamengo have confirmed the appointment of Argentine football tactician Jorge Sampaoli as the new coach of the team.
The 63-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at Flamengo until December 2024.
Sampaoli was in the Argentina dugout at the 2018 World Cup when the South American giants beat Nigeria 2-1 to advance to the last sixteen of the tournament, and was also also on the bench for a humiliating 4-2 defeat to the Super Eagles in a pre-World Cup friendly in 2017.
Nottingham Forest reportedly sounded out the former Sevilla boss about the possibility of replacing under fire coach Steve Cooper but he turned down the offer in favour of the Flamengo job.
Sampaoli would have been coaching Nigeria duo Emmanuel Dennis and Taiwo Awoniyi at Nottingham Forest if he had not declined the offer from the City Ground outfit.
The Super Eagles strikers are not guaranteed starters under Cooper, with the 2013 U17 World Cup winner named in the starting lineup on nine occasions from a possible 30 in the Premier League and the former Watford man starting three games less.
Heading into their Premier League game with Manchester United this weekend, Nottingham Forest are in the relegation zone with 27 points from thirty matches played, same number of points as 17th-placed Everton, who have a better goal difference.
