'It wasn't expected' - Iwobi admits he was favoured at Arsenal, hails Arsene Wenger
Published: April 19, 2023Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has admitted that his promotion to the Arsenal first team came as a surprise.
Iwobi, who currently plies his trade with Everton, revealed that he joined Arsenal at the age of 9. He went on to feature for the U18s, U19s and U21s of the North London side.
He made his first-team debut in Arsenal's 3-0 loss to Sheffield on Wednesday in the League Cup on 27th October 2015.
Four days later, Iwobi made his Premier League debut in the Gunners' 3-0 win over Swansea City , before scoring his first two Premier League goals for the club in back-to-back matches against Everton and Watford.
The Super Eagles midfielder made his Champions League debut in Arsenal's 5-1 loss to Bayern Munich as an 85th-minute substitute.
"It wasn't expected because I got favoured at the time as there were so many talented people. Most of them had to go on loan but I didn't have to, so I was always training and waiting for my chance," Iwobi told Premier League's Behind the Game - a content series hosted by Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
"Arsene Wenger at the time was a very patient man, gave me the opportunity and I was able to take it"
Iwobi featured for Arsenal 149 times, scoring 15 goals and providing 25 assists in all competitions before moving to Everton in the summer of 2019.
