EFL Awards : Akpom scoops main prize, another Hale End product joins Boro striker in TOTS
Published: April 24, 2023
Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom scooped the main prize at the 2023 EFL Awards.
The London-born Nigerian striker has been named the Championship Player of the Season for firing Middlesbrough into promotion contention.
Akpom is the leading scorer in the division with 28 goals in 36 appearances, with 24 of the goals scored with Michael Carrick in the Middlesbrough dugout.
Of his 28 league goals, 20 were scored at the Riverside Stadium and eight in away games.
Akpom is the first player of Nigerian descent to win the Championship Player of the Season since the award started in 2006.
The 27-year-old set a new record for consecutive goals scored in home games in the Championship when he netted his ninth in a 3-1 win over Hull City five days ago.
Akpom has also been named in the Sky Bet Championship Team of the Season and he isn't the only Nigerian player selected in the best XI, with another Hale End product Nathan Tella also included.
Southampton loanee Tella played a key role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League with seventeen goals and five assists to his name in 38 appearances in the division.
