Arsenal GK Ramsdale sends message to Okonkwo after loanee wins his first trophy as a pro
Published: May 02, 2023
Arsenal-owned goalkeeper of Nigerian descent Arthur Okonkwo has won the first trophy of his professional career.
In what was his fourteen appearance for the club he joined on loan in the January transfer window, the Hale End product posted a clean sheet as Sturm Graz defeated Rapid Vienna 2-0 to win the Austrian Cup on Sunday.
Second half goals from Manprit Sarkaria helped them claim their first trophy since 2018 when they beat Red Bull Salzburg to win the Austrian Cup.
Okonkwo was one of the heroes of Sturm Graz's cup success, saving two penalties in the shootout win over Red Bull Salzburg before keeping back-to-back clean sheets against LASK and Rapid Vienna.
In the second minute of second half stoppage time in Sunday's showpiece with Rapid Vienna, the Anglo-Nigerian goalkeeper denied Roman Kerschbaum with a fingertip save to ensure the clean sheet was preserved.
"Champions. What a team," Okonkwo wrote on Instagram.
Replying to Okonkwo's post, Arsenal's first choice goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale used a red heart emoji to express his happiness over the Arsenal loanee's achievement.
Last season, Okonkwo was on the bench for some Premier League games to act as cover for Ramsdale.
