Published: May 17, 2023
The English Football Association have announced the Young Lions roster for the 2023 UEFA European Under-17 Championship which begins in Hungary on Wednesday with at least two Nigeria-eligible players part of the group.
Arsenal attacking midfielder cum striker Ethan Nwaneri and Chelsea fullback Somto Boniface have been selected in the squad by manager Ryan Garry.
The two youngsters are eligible for the Flying Eagles through their parents but are provisionally cap-tied to the 2017 world champions at U17 level after featuring in the qualifying rounds of the U17 Euro.
Nwaneri played his first competitive match for England U17s against Lithuania in October 2022, while Boniface made his first competitive appearance in a 3-1 win versus Denmark two months ago.
The Arsenal starlet played a key role as England qualified for the European Championship with six goals and one assist.
England start their campaign against Croatia on Thursday, May 18, followed by matches against the Netherlands (May 21) and Switzerland (May 24).
The U17 Euro acts as the European qualifiers for the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup with five qualification spots up for grabs.
Tottenham Hotspur academy product Timothy Eyoma was a member of the England squad that won the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup.
