Anglo-Nigerian GK left out of Arsenal pre-season tour squad amid transfer links
Published: July 16, 2023
Anglo-Nigerian goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been excluded from Arsenal's tour squad to the United States amidst transfer links.
This was confirmed on Arsenal's official website where a 29-player squad has been announced for the club's pre-season tour to the United States and the young goalie's name was missing from the list.
Okonkwo was involved in the Gunners' first pre-season game against Watford which was played behind closed doors at London Colney last Saturday but did not travel with the team to Germany to face 2. Bundesliga side FC Nürnberg on Thursday.
Last season, the 21-year-old enjoyed loan spells with Crewe Alexandra in the League Two and Austrian side Sturm Graz where he won the Austrian Cup which was his first professional silverware.
Following his brilliant outing with the Austrian outfit, he has been linked with moves to German and English Football League clubs and it would be surprising if he doesn't leave on loan or permanently before the closure of the transfer window.
Promising English midfielder of Nigeria descent Ethan Nwaneri was also excluded from the list and is now set to rejoin the youth team for the new season.
During their United States tour, the Gunners will face MLS All-Stars which will be tutored by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney before exciting encounters against Manchester United and Barcelona in New Jersey and Los Angeles respectively.
