'He would fit in' - Ex-Rangers star reckons Fulham is a good a destination for Bassey
Published: July 28, 2023
Former Glasgow Rangers defender Alan Hutton reckons that Fulham is a good destination for Super Eagles central defender Calvin Bassey.
Subject to the Nigerian passing a routine medical, the Cottagers will confirm the capture of the Leicester City academy product in the coming days.
Brighton & Hove were also interested in signing Bassey but Fulham acted fast to get the deal over the line after reaching a club-to-club agreement with Ajax Amsterdam and convinced the player to agree personal terms.
Bassey became the most expensive Nigerian defender in history, overtaking Super Eagles legend Taribo West, when he moved to Ajax for a guaranteed fee of 23 million euros.
However, his transfer to the Amsterdam club did not work out as planned and he lost his spot in the starting XI after the dismissal of Alfred Schreuder - the manager that recommended his signing from Rangers.
"I thought Ajax would have been a good place for him to learn, it is very technical and I think that was the area of his game the he needed to brush up on," Hutton said to Football Insider.
"Going somewhere like Fulham I think he would fit in no problem. It is probably the next level for him to go and play in the Premier League and it is likely something he would love to do."
Bassey is set to become the second Super Eagles defender to return to England this summer, after Chelsea youth product Ola Aina who recently joined Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.
