Ex-Scotland international names his ideal Rangers XI: Dessers in, Balogun out
Published: August 01, 2023
Retired Scotland international Kenny Miller has named his strongest Rangers starting lineup ahead of their first competitive game of the new season against Kilmarnock at the BBSP Stadium Rugby Park on Saturday, August 5.
The Light Blues have bolstered their squad with the signings of eight players in the summer transfer window, including two Nigeria internationals Cyriel Dessers and Leon Balogun.
While Dessers was brought in from Cremonese and has inked a four-year contract, Balogun returned for a second spell at Ibrox, signing a contract until the end of the 2023-2024 season.
The two Nigerian players are seriously in contention to be named in the starting XI against Kilmarnock, given that they started two of the last three pre-season games played by Rangers.
However, Miller has predicted that Balogun will drop out of the starting lineup for the trip to Rugby Park, while Dessers will make his full debut against Killie.
"Well I've gave you my back four, you'll have (Jack) Butland in goal, (James) Tavernier, (Connor) Goldson, (John) Souttar and you'll have (Borna) Barisic," Miller said on Clyde Superscoreboard, via Glasgow Times.
"I think Cifuentes and (Nico) Raskin will play as a two and ahead of that you'll have a (Todd) Cantwell and (Sam) Lammers or (Tom) Lawrence, and I think you might see Danilo and (Cyriel) Dessers as a front two."
Of the 65 appearances made by Balogun in his first stint at Rangers, the central defender started 52.
