Pochettino runs the rule over Chelsea's brand new signing Ugochukwu in Chicago
Published: August 02, 2023
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Chelsea' latest signing Lesley Ugochukwu trained with his new teammates on Tuesday evening in Chicago.
Yesterday, The Blues announced the signing of the France underage international of Nigerian descent on a seven-year deal with a club option for the 2030-2031 season.
Pochettino will monitor Ugochukwu at close quaters before a decision is made on whether to integrate him into the first-team fold on a permanent basis or loan him out to continue his development.
Although the potential of the 2023 Golden Boy nominee is not in doubt, he is lacking in experience, having played 60 games as a professional during his time at Rennes, including twenty five from the off.
A season-long loan move to Chelsea's partner club Strasbourg has been mooted for the 19-year-old.
Reacting to the capture of Ugochukwu, Pochettino said to Chelsea's official website: "Today is going to be his first training session with us. He is a young and talented player. We don’t know if we have the possibility for him to play tomorrow but we will assess him.
"Now it is time to assess him until the end of the transfer window, and see if he is going to be with us or go on loan."
Chelsea's next friendly is against German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund on Thursday morning.
