Published: August 06, 2023
The English FA Community Shield, formerly known as the Charity Shield, is an annual match played between the previous season's Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners.
If a club wins the league and the FA Cup, it goes on to face the league's runner-up.
Just like today's encounter, Manchester City won the domestic double last season and are set to face Arsenal who finished second in the Premier League last term despite topping the table for most of the campaig.
Over the years, we have had Nigerians win the trophy including Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Mikel Obi, Celestine Babayaro, Alex Iwobi, Daniel Amokachi and Nwankwo Kanu.
In this article, we shall be revealing the three Nigerian players who have scored in the 115-year-old competition.
1. Nwakwo Kanu: The Nigerian legend scored and assisted for Arsenal as they came from behind to beat Manchester United in 1999.
The Arsenal icon is the first Nigerian to score and win Man-of-the-match award in the Community Shield
2. Victor Moses: The 32-year-old then in the colours of Chelsea scored the Blues' only goal in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal in 2017 but saw his side lose the title on penalties.
3. Kelechi Iheanacho: He scored Leicester City's sole goal from the penalty spot against Manchester City in 2021.
The Super Eagles forward was also responsible for the penalty as he was brought down by Nathan Aké and was named the Man-of-the-match.
