Official: Midfielder of Nigerian descent with 100 career appearances for Chelsea joins Luton
Published: August 09, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Premier League newcomers Luton Town have announced the signing of cap-tied England international of Nigerian descent, Ross Barkley.
The attacking midfielder has returned to the Premier League a year after he departed Chelsea for OGC Nice in France.
During his time at Stamford Bridge, Barkley made one hundred career appearances for the Blues, registering 12 goals and 11 assists.
The 29-year-old won the FA Cup, UEFA Europa League and Fifa Club World Cup as a Chelsea player.
The 33-cap England international has joined Luton Town on a free transfer, subject to international clearance, ahead of the Hatters' Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove on Saturday.
Luton Town have not disclosed the length of deal signed by Barkley but informed that he will be wearing the number 6 at the back of his jersey for the 2023-2024 season.
Commenting on his return to the Premier League, the Everton academy product said: "Why Luton? Going from the Conference to the Premier League is a great story and for me personally to be back in the Premier League, it’s great motivation.
"I’m still relatively young and over the last couple of years I’ve not played as much as I’d have liked.
"But I’ve reserved a lot of energy and looked after myself, so it’s great to be here now as I’ve got a lot to show but I’m ready and feeling motivated."
Barkley links up with three players of Nigerian descent at Kenilworth Road, namely Gabriel Osho, Chiedozie Ogbene and Elijah Adebayo.
