Official: Liverpool confirm box-to-box midfielder has signed new deal and eligible for Nigeria
Published: August 11, 2023
Through their official website, Premier League giants Liverpool have announced that Afolami Onanuga has signed a new deal with the club.
Liverpool have also officially confirmed that Onanuga has Nigerian and British nationality, meaning he's eligible to represent the Golden Eaglets and Flying Eagles.
The Anfield club informed that the Anglo-Nigerian starlet will begin the 2023-2024 season as a first year scholar and has been promoted to the U18s squad on a permanent basis.
Onanuga has been described by Liverpool's official website as 'a box-to-box central midfield player who made his Liverpool FC U18s debut as an U16 player during the 2022-23 season'.
In his final season as a schoolboy, he totaled eleven appearances in the U18 Premier League and was on target against Newcastle United.
The 16-year-old also made his debuts in the FA Youth Cup and U18 Premier League Cup, and was called up for the UEFA Youth League clashes against Napoli and Porto.
Onanuga joined Liverpool at U11 level after he was spotted playing grassroots football in Manchester by Academy scout Ricky Heywood.
Liverpool will battle Nottingham Forest in their opening match of the new U18 Premier League season on Saturday, August 12.
