Done deal: Hale End product Akpom joins Ajax Amsterdam for a fee of N10.4b
Published: August 16, 2023
With a statement on their official website, Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam have announced the signing of Arsenal's Hale End Academy product Chuba Akpom from Championship outfit Middlesbrough FC.
Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed that they are paying a transfer fee of €12.3 million (approximately N10.4 billion in Nigerian currency) to Middlesbrough and this amount can rise to a maximum of € 14.3 million due to performance-related add-ons.
Akpom has signed a five-year contract that will keep him at Ajax until the end of the 2027-2028 season.
The four-time European champions have pulled off a transfer coup by signing Akpom as he was courted by a plethora of clubs in England, France and Germany before agreeing terms with Ajax Amsterdam.
With a year left on his contract, Middlesbrough had to accept the bid from Ajax, rather than lose him for nothing at the end of this season.
Akpom had a glittering season in 2022-2023, scoring 28 goals in 38 matches in the regular season to win the Championship's Golden Boot award and was named Sky Bet Championship Player of the Year.
The 27-year-old was also named to the EFL Championship Team of the Season, and claimed Boro's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year.
As an Arsenal player, Akpom spent time on loan at Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, Brighton & Hove and Sint-Truiden, before sealing a permanent transfer to PAOK in Greece, from where he joined Middlesbrough in 2020.
Akpom has been assigned the number 10 jersey at Ajax for the 2023-2024 season.
