Crystal Palace boss confirms Chelsea showed interest in 2021 Super Eagles invitee

2021 Super Eagles invitee Michael Olise ended speculation surrounding his future for the time being by signing a new four-year contract with Crystal Palace on Thursday, August 17.

Olise was persuaded to stay by the powers that be at Crystal Palace so he can continue his development.

According to reports, Manchester City identified Olise as a possible replacement for Riyad Mahrez who moved to the Saudi Pro League this summer, while Chelsea are always in the market to sign the best young players in the world.

Olise is viewed as one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League and was in outstanding form for Crystal Palace in 2022-2023 with thirteen goal involvements in 37 appearances.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that he was worried when Chelsea showed interest in the France U21 international of Nigerian and Algerian descent.

In quotes relayed by Crystal Palace's official website, Hodgson said: "I had been concerned – it’s always concerning when a club of Chelsea’s stature take interest in a player, and people will suggest that a move to them might be the best bet.

"I had always hoped that wouldn’t be the case and that Michael would realise that at such a young age his future here is very bright, and we can help him move very quickly on to another level. The decision has been his."

Hodgson confirmed that Olise will not make his season debut against Arsenal as he is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered while on international with France at the 2023 European U21 Championship.
