EFL Trophy: Uwakwe scores against Arsenal, exciting prospect Nwaneri on target in shootout
Published: August 22, 2023
Former Chelsea wingback of Nigeria descent Tariq Uwakwe was on target for Swindon Town in their loss on penalties to Arsenal U21s in an English Football League Trophy tie played on Tuesday night at The County Ground.
While the match ended in a 2-2 draw after regulation time, Arsenal would go on to win 5-4 on penalties.
Swindon Town broke the deadlock through an own goal from Reuell Walters in the sixth minute.
The young Gunners restored parity through Lino Sousa who was assisted by exciting prospect Ethan Nwaneri.
Uwakwe restored the home side's lead in the 34th minute after a defensive mix-up from the away side.
Jimi Gower drew level for Mehmet Ali's side eight minutes before the end of the normal regulation and that took the game to penalties
Uwakwe could not participate in the penalty shootout as he had been substituted for Tyrese Shade in the 67th minute, while Nwaneri converted his spot kick.
The Gunners picked up an additional bonus point after winning the penalty shootout.
